Former WCF Stars Shine in Recent AFFLICTION and UFC Events
(PRESS RELEASE) -- World Championship Fighting would like to
congratulate Jon Jones and
Dan
Lauzon for their recent victories on Pay-Per-View. Lauzon went
a perfect 4-0 in the WCF (3 TKO's and 1 submission) and was riding
a 7 winning streak into his fight with Bobby Green
on Affliction's "Day of Reckoning" event. Green came into the fight
at 7-1, and has a reputation as a heavy handed brawler who throws
everything with bad intentions. He swarmed Lauzon from the opening
bell, and the fight was a back and forth battle that forced Lauzon
to recover from several low blows to earn the first round
submission via rear naked choke.
Jon Jones was impressive at WCF 3 in June, knocking his opponent out in just 36 seconds of the first round. With the win, Jones earned a shot in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). After looking great in his first UFC fight against Andre Gusmao, Jones was matched with UFC star Stephan Bonnar. Bonnar is best known for his war with Forrest Griffin in the season finale of the first season of "The Ultimate Fighter" reality show. He has since gone on to become one of the best light heavyweights on the UFC's roster and came in a big favorite over the 21 year old Jones. Jones showed no fear from the opening bell and took the fight to the gritty veteran. He was able use his Greco-Roman wrestling to hit several big throws and slams on Bonnar, and was also able to land some big strikes, most notable a spinning back elbow that dropped Bonnar and nearly ended the fight. In the end Jones was awarded a unanimous decision and served notice to the rest of the light heavyweight division that he was a force to be reckoned with.
