HARD KNOCKS FIGHTING CHAMPIONSHIP TO HOST CALGARY’S FIRST AMATEUR MMA EVENT
(PRESS RELEASE) -- Hard Knocks Fighting Championship Ltd. and the
Silver Dollar Casino have partnered to host School of Hard Knocks
March 28th, 2009. The all-amateur event will be a ten-fight card
fought with 6-ounce gloves and modified striking rules that
prohibit knees and elbows to the head and striking behind an
athlete’s ears.
Hard Knocks Fighting Championship Ltd. is the first MMA promotion in Canada with an Olympic pedigree. The organization was founded by Beijing wrestling Olympian Ari Taub and his training partner and MMA coach Beamer Comfort. Comfort has been concerned about the lack of amateur opportunities for Calgary fighter since he started using his wrestling background to train professional fighters 2 years ago.
With MMA expanding around the world at the professional level, the sport has become extremely top heavy. Until this event, Calgary fighters had been forced to travel hundreds of kilometers out of their jurisdiction to test their skills as amateurs, or debut as pros with no previous amateur experience. The goal of the School of Hard Knocks event is to give Calgary athletes an opportunity to test their skills in more controlled setting with the added bonus of not tainting their professional record.
Developing a strong amateur development system is important, not just for insuring Canada’s continued success in MMA, but also for ensuring the success of MMA in Canada.
The Hard Knocks Fighting Championship will break new ground with their first amateur event SCHOOLOF HARD KNOCKS on March 28,2009 at the Silver Dollar Casino.
