Light Heavyweight Champ ‘Slava’ Vasilevsky: 'Completely according to plan…'
Dec 30, 2010
(PRESS RELEASE) -- When Vyacheslav ‘Slava’ Vasilevsky stunned and
bewildered Tomas Narkun with speed and agility at M-1 Challenge
XXII, fans watched as an aspiring young protégé’s confidence
shattered faster than broken glass; every punch Narkun failed to
defend was like a crack in a dam about to fail. At 3:23 of Round 2,
Narkun finally gave up, declaring Vasilevsky the first-ever M-1
Challenge light heavyweight champion.
“Man, it was the way I wanted everything to go. It went completely according to plan,” touted the Sambo- 70 fighter. “From the start I felt it was a one-sided battle that ended the way it should have. At one point I even wondered how much more Narkun could take and then it was like his will broke and he just gave up.”
Forcing a verbal submission from Narkun, ‘Slava’ earned the
evening’s Fight of the Night top honor; not bad for a fighter who
weighed in at only 191 pounds. Although never appearing to be in
trouble, Vasilevsky was aware of ring position and where Narkun
presented the most danger, “For the most part, we battled standing
up and didn’t go to the ground but I was caught in a deep choke in
the first round which made my neck stiffen up.” But it didn’t take
Vasilevsky long to sense that Narkun’s reaction speed to jabs,
hooks and uppercuts simply weren’t there; from a spectator’s
perspective, Narkun’s ability counter was elementary at best.
With fluid, pinpoint accuracy reminiscent of a doctor commencing an autopsy, Vasilevsky systematically dismantled Narkun and stripped him of the confidence he possessed at the opening bell. It was an incredible display of striking that delivered on the high expectations the bout was anticipated to produce.
The anticipated title defense already has fans talking and is expected to take place early in 2011.
With M-1 Challenge champions established in all five weight classes, a true contenders system will fuel events throughout 2011, driving M-1 Global’s growth as a leading brand in the US and international markets.
2011 includes a full slate of M-1 Challenge events held in the United States and Europe. These are the mega-event spectaculars where Champions defend their titles and contenders jockey for position. Feeding the contention system will be two Selection tournaments in 2011 with details being announced shortly.

With the victory and light heavyweight championship title,
Vasilevsky notched his current win streak to nine and improves his
record to an impressive 11-1. The talented young fighter is poised
for what 2011 holds for him. “My next fight will be my first title
defense, probably against American, Byron Byrd. I'll be ready when
the fight gets scheduled. To me it’s not so important who I fight,
it’s how I prepare. I can stand and strike or go to the ground but
I have a lot more to learn. I’m only 22 years old and know I still
have areas in my game to improve.”
