Magalhaes Delivers at M-1 Challenge XXII
Dec 22, 2010
(PRESS RELEASE) -- Making his M-1 Global debut against Alihan
Magomedov at M-1 Challenge XXII, the touted slick submission
specialist returned to the ring after knee surgery that kept him
fighter sidelined for the better portion of 2010. In the typical
fashion he’s known for, Vinny ‘Pezao’ Magalhaes, executed a
textbook triangle at 1:10 of round two that astonished the
crowd.
From the opening bell, Magalhaes executed a perfect game plan with composure as Magomedov was hesitant, and even reluctant, to venture to the canvass with the highly decorated jiu jitsu ace. After securing a phenomenal takedown, Magalhaes worked through a series of seamless transitions as a stunned Magomedov held on and fired heavy shots at any opportunity he could.
Magomedov successfully defended the submission attempts and escaped
a very close first round, however, Magalhaes’ was just too much to
handle after the pair hit the canvass for the first time in the
second frame. As Magalhaes set up a reverse triangle choke / armbar
that no one in the arena even noticed, Magomedov had no choice but
to tap or endure further injury. “I had the triangle locked in and
felt a light tap but the referee didn’t stop the fight. Having been
in a similar position before I pulled the arm and turned it
outwards; he tapped hard after that,” said Magalhaes after the
fight. The three time Brazilian jiu jitsu world champion recently
now betters himself to 6-5 and looks forward to his next fight.

‘Pezao’ had also recently taken part in an all star seminar lineup in Saint Petersburg, Russia designed to assist in the development of M-1Global’s upcoming stable of young fighters. “I’ve trained in Japan, Brazil, the United States and now Russia, one thing that I can say is that the Russian fighters were some of the most intense guys that I have ever been around,” said Vinny Magalhaes.
Speaking with M-1 Global, the submission phenom discussed his trip to Saint Petersburg and his impression of Eastern European fighters, “I really liked St. Petersburg; the city was just as beautiful as I was expecting. Working with the Russian athletes, it’s clear that they don’t have the same resources that we have in the USA but that doesn’t change how tough they can be. Some of those guys were literally training 8 hours a day,” said Magalhaes.
