Monson ready to make it back to the top of the mountain

(PRESS RELEASE) -- For the first time in his illustrious career, “The Snowman” is headed to Strikeforce. Jeff “The Snowman” Monson will put his impressive eight-fight winning streak on the line when he takes on former Olympian and undefeated mixed martial arts competitor Daniel Cormier at “Strikeforce: Overeem vs. Werdum” in Dallas, Texas on June 18.

Monson has already had an impressive start to 2011, going 3-0 while competing in three different countries. Monson started off the year in Canada, where he submitted Lee Mein with a guillotine choke just over three minutes into their bout. From there, Monson competed at “Fight Time 4” in Florida, taking a unanimous decision over former King of the Cage champion Tony Lopez to become the inaugural ISKA heavyweight champion. At the end of April, Monson traveled to Switzerland for the Strength & Honor Championships, where he defeated Maro Perak (who was 20-2-1 at the time) to become the SHC heavyweight champion.

But from the beginning of the year, the stated goal of Monson has been to make it back to one of the major organizations, and he now has reached that goal as he will compete in Strikeforce for the first time.

“I'm very excited to have the opportunity to fight in a big show again,” said Monson. “I'm hoping to put on a great fight and work my way back under contract with a large a organization.”

A highly decorated grappler who holds the rank of black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Monson has trained at the world-renowned American Top Team in Coconut Creek, Florida for the majority of his career. A well-rounded fighter, Monson also likes to think of himself as a well-rounded person, as he also has a Master’s Degree in psychology.

The 40-year-old has seen ups and downs in his mixed martial arts career in which he has competed all across the world and fought for the UFC heavyweight title, but he feels like he still has more to prove.

“I may be over the hill,” said Monson while laughing, “but don't count me out. I'm in the best shape of my life, I'm on an eight fight win streak, and I'm ready to prove I'm here to stay.”
