Roberts: I’m the underdog

(PRESS RELEASE) -- DANNY ROBERTS says he’s aiming to cause a shock in 2012 by capturing the vacant Cage Warriors middleweight title.

Roberts (5-0-0) has been included in next year’s eight-man tournament, which will determine the next CWFC champion in the middleweight division.

The 25-year-old will join Chris Fields, Jack Mason, Valentino Petrescu, Tony Machado, Victor Cheng and two yet-to-be announced fighters in battling it out for the belt.

Roberts said: “I’m massively excited about having the opportunity to fight for the title. It’s an opportunity that has to be pounced on and it’s massive exposure.”

Roberts has impressed since making his professional debut just a year ago and will take an unbeaten record into next year’s tournament.

Cage Warriors fans got a glimpse of what the Bristol native is capable of at the HMV Forum in London back in July, when a knee to the body finished off David Howell in their welterweight clash at CWFC 43.

“I can’t wait to fight on Cage Warriors again,” said Roberts. “I love everything about them. It’s like having a big family. They look after you well and have the utmost respect for fighters.”

Although the draw for the tournament has yet to be made, preparations are in full swing for Roberts’ quarter-final match-up in February.

“The standard in this tournament is massive – it’s got most of the best guys in country and I think I must be the only one not in the top 20,” he said.

“As for my chances of winning it, I think I'm definitely an outsider but I plan to change that. I'm going to thrive on this opportunity and I’ll be ready to beat whoever’s put in front of me.

“I’m confident with an unbeaten record, but more than anything I’m confident that this tournament will give me the opportunity to reach my full potential and show the UK MMA scene what I can do.

“I'm still new to this sport, with only two years of experience, but I know I can entertain whatever the outcome.”

When asked what people can expect from Danny Roberts in the middleweight tournament, he said: “As time goes on I think that gets easier and easier to predict.

“They can expect me to be fast, powerful and explosive, but most of all I'll be aiming to show that I’m full of heart coming up against top-level competition.”

He added: “I’d just like to take this opportunity to thank Cage Warriors for giving me the chance to prove myself and also my team at Next Generation for getting me to where I am.”
