Sellout Crowd Showers Fighters With Cash

(PRESS RELEASE) -- As has been the tradition for the last 26 years at the Irvine Marriott’s Battle In The Ballroom pro shows, when fans sense that fighters have given above and beyond what is expected of them, and fight toe-to-toe each and every round, they show their appreciation by wadding up paper money and throwing it in the ring. It is then collected and split between both fighters regardless of who wins.

That was the case last night when a standing room, sold out crowd of 1,452 fight fans cheered and donated to the tremendous performance displayed by bantamweight boxers Richard Contreras and Eder Peralta. Contreras 1-1 out of Riverside had Peralta down in the first and third rounds, but could not put the game 1-2 Peralta from Pasadena away. Besides a standing ovation from the fans, they also threw over $100 cash into the ring.

“This is what the Battle In The Ballroom is all about, and what every club promoter should shoot for,” said promoter Roy Englebrecht. “It’s all about giving the fans action, action, action. You don’t have to woo them with ten or eight round Main Events, just give them four round barnburners!”

In mixed martial arts action, the featured fight did not disappoint, as Long Beach middleweight Chris Saunders ran his pro record to 7-1 with a unanimous decision win over previously undefeated 3-0 Andy Morales out of Laguna Beach. In a three round war both fighters stood and fought, as well as hurt each other on the mat. In the second round both fighters fell out of the ring onto the ring apron as the intensity was so thick you feel 50 feet from the ring.

In the opening MMA bout of the evening, Frank Pizzirulli won for the first time in five tries with a unanimous decision over 3-10 Brandon Jinnies, in a fight that was a lot closer than the score indicated.

And in the third MMA bout on the card, Carlos Aguilar made his pro debut a special one, with a rear naked choke win over 2-4 Raja Shippen.

The action didn’t let up on the six bout boxing & MMA hybrid card, as Espinoza Boxing’s latest signing lightweight David Morales out of Guatemala made his pro debut in exciting fashion, but could only get a split decision draw against another pro debuter Juan Reyes from Riverside.

In the “knockout of the night” 2-2 Alejandro Soto of LA literally knocked out Santa Ana’s Gomez with a tremendous left hook 90 seconds into the first round. Gomez was down at the 45 second mark, and then was gone for good with the big left hand of Soto.

This is the second consecutive sellout for the Battle In The Ballroom, and they return to the Irvine Marriott on Thursday, August 5th, as part of the Fight Promoter University VII four day teaching session.
