Shark Fights 14 Line-up

(PRESS RELEASE) -- Texas based mixed martial arts fight promotion company, Shark Fight Promotions, announced yesterday that due to Irvin’s “alleged” steroid allegations and an undisclosed injury that Alexander suffered during training, they were forced to pull the bout from Shark Fights 14. The organization was quick to replace Alexander vs. Irvin with an equally compelling bout. The new co-main event features top ranked female fighters Tara LaRosa and Carina Damm, a highly anticipated bout that has been in the works for nearly three years.

According to Brent Medley, president of Shark Fight Promotions, “LaRosa and Damm are two of the best female MMA fighters in the 125lb division and this fight has been a long time coming. Promotions have been attempting to put together LaRosa vs. Damm since the BodogFight league dissipated three years ago. We are thrilled that it is going to take place under the Shark Fights banner.”

Medley went on to say, “The winner of LaRosa vs. Damm will potentially be up for Shark Fights first ever women’s championship title in early summer. Also, as I mentioned in a previous statement, the highly anticipated re-match between Alexander and Irvin will be rescheduled for later this year.”

Tara LaRosa (19-2) is currently the #2-ranked pound-for-pound female MMA fighter in the world by MMARising.com, second to only Strikeforce sensation Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos. LaRosa is a top ranked fighter in both the 125lb and 135lb divisions and recently defeated former Strikeforce title challenger Takayo Hashi at DaMMAge Fight League 1, capturing the league’s first 125lb women’s title. LaRosa was BodogFight’s first and final women's bantamweight champion and holds notable wins over fighters such as Amanda Buckner and Kelly Kobold.

LaRosa had this to say about her upcoming bout with Damm, “I only want to fight the best women at my weight, and Carina is one of the best! Thank you Shark Fights for making this happen…stay tuned for a great fight!”

LaRosa’s opponent Brazilian fighter Carina Damm (15-5) is also a top-ranked contender in the women’s 125lb division, with a career that has spanned several countries including Brazil, Japan and Costa Rica. This highly skilled, well rounded fighter, recognized as much for her beauty as for her fighting abilities, was on a ten fight win streak prior to her loss to Hitomi Akano at the Strikeforce women's tournament in August of 2010. Damm, who is coming off of a recent loss to the #3 ranked Cat Zingano, plans to kick off 2011 with a victory over LaRosa.

According to Damm’s coach and manager Jesse Finney, “This is a very important fight to Carina. A very personal fight. LaRosa disrespected Carina in the past when they fought under the BodogFight banner and there has been anamosity between the two ever since. This fight has fallen through several times for various reasons and Carina is very excited that the fight is finally solidified. She is more than ready to step into the cage and throw down with LaRosa.”

LaRosa vs. Damm is just one of 15 compelling professional match-ups on the Shark Fights 14 card.
