The NAAFS Makes a Successful Trek
(PRESS RELEASE) -- The NAAFS recently journeyed into new territory
for North coast Showdown 3. Held at the grandstands of the Erie
County Fairgrounds during Ohio Bike Week, the NAAFS made held a
successful debut event in Sandusky, OH. The combination of new
stars and familiar faces in the National Amateur Series provided
fans with an incredible night of MMA action inside the NAAFS
cage.
In the main event, Jay Wadsworth (5-2) of Jamestown MMA once again played the role of spoiler when he defeated Sandusky's own Bo "The Kid" Coleman (8-8) in the final round of their Lightweight fight. The action went back and forth for the first two rounds, but during the final frame Wadsworth capitalized on Coleman's mistake to lock in a Triangle Choke and secure the all important victory. With the win, Wadsworth remains a contender in the very crowded National Amateur Lightweight Division.
An NAAFS original made a triumphant return to the promotion at North coast Showdown 3, when Dan "Dragon" Spohn (8-3) defeated Josh "The Problem" Moore (6-4) of Team Beatdown by Unanimous Decision. Spohn had been away from the NAAFS since the original North coast Showdown back in 2006 and was the more than eager to prove that he still belonged amongst the best in the National Amateur Light Heavyweight Division. He cleverly averted the wrestling skills of Moore, using a combination of precision strikes and ground control to score enough points in the minds of the judges for the win. Almost three years after he last competed in the promotion, Spohn once again finds himself ranked amongst the top fighters in the division.
In National Amateur Welterweight division action, Tony Rottari (4-3) of Chu To Bu Judo & Harrison Boxing Club made history by becoming the first ever NAAFS competitor to win by Gogoplata, when he defeated Larry Ray (2-2) in the first round of their fight.
It was a highly anticipated rematch, as Dominic "The Ironman" McGhee (5-5) jumped up two weight classes to once again take on Michael "Taco" Cardona (6-5) in a National Amateur Middleweight division fight. Despite the difference in size, these two warriors battled back and forth for three solid rounds in a very close bout. In the end, history repeated itself as Taco was declared the winner by Split Decision. After the battle, both fighters were highly respectful of the other and Cardona declared that he was eager to come back to compete in the NAAFS again.
