Tony Ferguson to Take to the Cage

(Oxnard, CA) - Popular Mexican-American mixed martial arts fighter Tony Ferguson will fight this Friday night at the Quiet Cannon in Montebello when he takes on Brandon Jennings.

Ferguson, who trains in Ventura, has a professional record of five victories, with only one defeat, with all five victories by stoppage or tap out.

In his last bout, Ferguson stopped Daniel Hernandez at the Hyatt Westlake Plaza Hotel in Westlake Village on March 5th of this year.

Ferguson was born and raised in Oxnard, but went to live in Michigan with his family at the age of five. He has since returned to Southern California after going to high school and college in Michigan.

“I was basically homesick and returned permanently to the West Coast. I would visit family and friends, but I missed Oxnard.”

It was during his time in Michigan that he excelled in wrestling, earning a scholarship to wrestle at Grand Valley State University.

Ferguson, who specializes in jiu jitsu, feels that because of his smaller stature fighters underestimate his abilities in the ring or cage.

“That has been the story of my life,” said Ferguson, who has dreams of becoming a world champion. “Fighters who are bigger and taller than me underestimate what I can do. Afterwards, they sure change their opinions of me.”

Ferguson has caught the eye of Rene Carranco and Armando Renteria, who runs the successful Prymetime Promotions. Carranco recently signed Ferguson to a promotional contract.

“He has all of the tools that we like in a fighter,” said Carranco, who has promoted successful boxing & mma shows in Ventura County. “Tony is a stand-up guy who is very dedicated. We see the hunger in him and he wants to fight.”

Ferguson has the distinction of being the fight fighter signed by Prymetime Promotions.

Joe Pecora, who has managed former world champion Fernando Vargas, also has a stake in Ferguson and acts as his manager/ advisor.

“Rene and I wanted someone who has a good head on his shoulders. He is one of the more dedicated fighters that I have met and he trains himself hard. He was a fantastic college wrestler who is very marketable. He is a total package.”

Ferguson, who has trained a few fighters in his spare time, is humbled by having people like Pecora and a promotional company behind him.

He is dedicated to work hard and live up to the expectations he has for himself.

If all goes well with his fight on Friday, Ferguson is scheduled to fight again on Thursday, May 28th at the Hyatt Westlake Plaza Hotel in Westlake Village.

He will headline Prymetime Promotions’ “MMA at the Hyatt II: No Mercy,” which will also feature nine more fights.
