Top Light Heavyweight Prospect Yoel Romero signs 5-fight deal with Strikeforce

signed a 5-fight deal with Strikeforce and will debut on September
10 against former Strikeforce light heavyweight champion Rafael
“Feijao” Cavalcante in what is sure to be an excellent matchup.
Just four fights into his mixed martial arts career, Romero has already developed into a highlight-reel machine, as video of his unique ankle pick takedown over Michal Fijalka made rounds on the Internet, making him an immediate star. Most recently, video of his dominant knockout of Thai-boxing champion Laszlo Eck proved that he is much more than just a wrestler.
“I'm excited about this opportunity,” said Romero. “I've wanted to prove my skills in MMA for a long time and to get the opportunity to that with a person of Feijao's caliber is exciting.”
A former Olympic silver medalist at the 2000 games, Romero also held the World Championship in 1999. Much more than just a wrestler, Romero has been training with his younger brother Yoan Pablo Hernandez, whose 24-1 boxing record has propelled him to become the interim WBA cruiserweight champion of the world.
A native of Cuba, Romero will fight in the United States for the first time in September, but he doesn’t plan on being any less dominant. He’ll travel to the Queen City of Cincinnati on September 10 to take on former Strikeforce light heavyweight champion Rafael Cavalcante, and he sees it as an opportunity that he belongs on a level with the world’s top fighters.
“This will be Yoel's toughest competition to date,” said manager, Tina Vidal with ML Management. “When I tell him this- he laughs at me and says 'You wait to see what I can do in the cage.' I believe he is going to go in there and prove to the world he deserves to be in the Top 10.”
