VFC Crowns New Featherweight Champion, Retains Lightweight Champion
COUNCIL BLUFFS, IOWA — Before a nearly sold out crowd VFC
lightweight champion Alonzo "Zo Diddy" Martinez retained his belt
with a second-round submission of UFC Veteran Brandon
Melendez (Pictures) in the evening's main event. It
was the sixth title defense for Martinez, who was overpowered for
much of the match, before turning the tide and locking in a deep
guillotine sub from the mount.
A new featherweight king was crowned when Zach Wolff of New Richmond, Wis., got a leg lock around the neck of Josh Arocho of Omaha and changed a fight that was going all Arocho's way to a Wolff triangle choke submission in the second round.
Both fighters were finalists in a four man tournament, that started in May of this year.
In addition UFC veterans Chad Reiner (Pictures) and Ryan Jensen (Pictures) both scored first round victories, solidifying their standing in the Victory circuit, and furthering their climb back to the Ultimate Fighting Championship.
