West meets hard-hitting Vega at Bellator 30

(PRESS RELEASE) -- Bellator Fighting Championships today officially announced a September 23rd Season 3 Bantamweight semi-final fight between the dynamic and well-rounded Ed "Wild" West and the fast-rising Jose Vega at Bellator 30, which will take place at Fourth Street Live! in downtown Louisville, KY.

“Both Ed and Jose won very exciting fights in the quarter-finals and I expect nothing different on September 23rd,” said Bellator Chairman and CEO Bjorn Rebney. “We’re excited to return to Fourth Street Live! with a great fight card for Kentucky fans.”

Both fighters faced tough competition in their road to the semi-finals. West took on Bryan Goldsby, who was fresh off a convincing victory over WEC veteran Jeff Curran, at Bellator 27 in San Antonio earlier this month. In what turned out to be a three-round battle, West was able to display his impressive striking skills through out the fight – continually peppering Goldsby with punches and kicks from all angles while mixing in spectacular submission attempts on his way to the unanimous decision victory. With the win, West improved his professional record to 14-4 and his win streak to six straight.

In a rubber/grudge match between longtime rivals, Vega took on fellow Missouri native Danny Tims in Bantamweight quarterfinal action at Bellator 26. Vega was in trouble early, as Tims managed to drop him in the opening seconds with a vicious barrage of punches, but quickly recovered and utilized his superior wrestling base to turn the tide. The effort ultimately earned Vega a unanimous decision victory, which subsequently advanced him to the semi-finals.

Vega believes he will have a variety of avenues to victory over West when they meet in Louisville.

“I plan on determining were the fight goes,” said Vega. “If he punches me in the face I can take him down and pound on him or put him to sleep, that’s where my advantage is.”

“He’s a well rounded fighter but there are holes, he backs up with his chin up and hands down."

West believes he, in fact, holds the ultimate advantage in this fight.

“I actually think I match up with Vega a lot better than I did with Goldsby. This is a much better fight for me stylistically,” said West. “I’ve fought a lot of good wrestlers but Vega rarely shoots anyway. I’ll be in there staying busy on my feet. I’m training for a 15 minute war.”

Tickets for the event - which will also be broadcast LIVE nationwide on FOX Sports Net along with action-packed highlight shows that will air on NBC Saturday nights - are on sale now at ticketmaster.com
