Wolak scheduled to make MMA debut in Chicago

(PRESS RELEASE) -- According to some, Pawel Wolak may be the best boxer yet to switch over to the world of mixed martial arts.

The Polish standout compiled an impressive 29-2-1 record and No. 3 world ranking as a junior middleweight before retiring from boxing in order to prepare for MMA almost two years ago. In 2011, Pawel combined with Delvin Rodriguez to put on the “fight of the year” according to Sports Illustrated and Boxing Writers Association of America. Blessed with a huge Polish following, Pawel also holds the record for the most watched fight in ESPN history.

Pawel Was a great boxer, but he always wanted to try MMA,” said manager Monte Cox. “At 32 years old, he could have continued to be a top boxer, but he knew if he really wanted to give MMA a shot, he had to make the change while he was still in his prime. All the other elite boxers who have given MMA a try did so when their skills were already diminished.”

Pawel will make his debut on Oct. 11 when the Chicago Cagefighting Championship sponsors the American Predator Fighting Championship 17 event in the 11,800-seat Sears Centre outside of Chicago. An opponent has not yet been announced.

Besides his boxing skills, Pawel has a wrestling background in high school and has been working on his jiu-jitsu with Renzo Gracie and others for several years.

In Chicago, Wolak will work out at the Franklin Street Boxing Gym, located at 162 N. Franklin St. The gym will also be selling tickets on Wolak’s behalf. For more information online, check out www.chicagocagefighting.com.

Of Pawel’s 29 victories, 19 were by knockout, including a sensational six-round stoppage of former world champion Yuri Foreman on a sold out card at the MGM in Las Vegas.

In electing to leave boxing for MMA, Pawel left Top Rank Boxing and famous manager Cameron Dunkin, while most professional boxers are hoping for a chance to work with either.

Born in Debica, Poland, he moved to the United States at the age of 8. He was raised in New Jersey and now works as a correctional officer at Rikers Island in New York.

Tickets to the event are available at the Sears Centre box office and www.searscentre.com.
