LEMOORE, Calif. — Monday was a historic day in the Palace Fighting Championship, as president Christian Printup announced a monumental matchup in the 125-pound flyweight division.
“I’m very pleased to announce the biggest fight in the world at 125 pounds,” Printup said at a press conference at the Tachi Palace Hotel and Casino in Lemoore. “Ulysses Gomez will take on Thailand’s ‘M16’ on November 20 at PFC 11. Yes, it will be ‘Useless’ vs. ‘M16’ in the world’s greatest 125-pound fight to date.”
The fight will be a semifinal of a 125-pound tournament and it pits fighters of contrasting styles.
Thailand’s
Rambaa Somdet (Pictures) is known worldwide as one of the top 125-pound fighters. Somdet is a Muay-Thai champion that currently holds an impressive 5-2 record in MMA.
“I think this is an interesting matchup. It’s going to be a fight where we see who can impose their game plan on the other fighter,” said Las Vegas, Nev. grappling wizard Gomez. “We will see if he can take me down or if I can keep it on the fight, but no seriously, if I can take him down it’s going to be a long night for him.”
Gomez, who is one of the PFC’s wittiest fighters, was one of the first 125 pounders Printup signed. He is known all over the U.S and abroad for his grappling prowess and last year won the FILA World Pankration Championships in Turkey at 66 kilos.
“Ulysses is 2-0, undefeated, and hasn’t really needed to show his full arsenal. To me it’s hard to find a guy with more talent than him,” Printup said. “He’s a stud on the ground. We haven’t seen his hands yet, but we know that he has them. Really he just hasn’t had to use them. He is the type of guy I love, because he wants to fight the best in the world, because he thinks he is the best. I couldn’t think of a better matchup to put the 125-pound division on the map.”
The PFC is currently building one of the best flyweight rosters in the country. Printup has made it a personal point to seek out some of the very best flyweights not only in the U.S., but all over the world.”
“We’ve really brought attention to this division in the U.S. and we are acquiring some of the best 125-pound fighters in the world,” Printup said. “Most of these guys are now seeking us out, as we are known as the promotion that is putting this division on the map in the U.S.”
On the other side of the bracket in Nov. is jiu-jitsu black belt Luis Gonzales (3-0) of Hanford, Calif. and Phoenix, Ariz. wrestling sensation Pat Runez (4-0).
The vacant PFC World Flyweight Championship will be contested on Jan. 22 at PFC 12.
The PFC is also close to signing Albuquerque, New Mexico’s
John Dodson (Pictures) (6-3) and already has on contract Macon, Georgia’s
David Mitchell (Pictures) (2-1). The PFC is also looking forward to
David Espinosa (Pictures) (5-2-1) of Fresno, Calif. making the drop to 125 pounds.
Somdet recently defeated Noboru Taraha in a three-round decision on Sept. 28 at Shooto’s “Tradition 3”. Somdet has won four straight fights, recently signed with the PFC and is ready to make his U.S. debut.
“He’s the most accomplished guy in our division and definitely has the best stand up,” Gomez said. “He’s a good kick boxer and flamboyant. I hope he doesn’t do that stuff in the ring with me, though. He better not try and dance and show off, because I will kick him in the balls if he does.”
Somdet is known for elaborate entrances and some crazy antics in the ring in both MMA and his Thai boxing fights.
“He’s a legend in Thailand. He is a bonafide star over there. He’s a colorful character and his entrances are second-to-none. He brings arguably the most potent standup game to MMA and poses a tremendous challenge to Gomez. A lot of times you end up facing your biggest challenge down the road, but Gomez’ biggest challenge, I believe, will come in his third pro fight, but I also think that he is ready for it.”
The PFC also announced that it restructured Gomez’ contract, giving him a fight-fight, exclusive deal that is rumored to make him one of the richest 125-pound fighters in the world.
“I think that the new contract is a testament to hard work. I’m very happy with the contract extension and me now being probably the highest paid 25 pounder in the world. I appreciate everything Christian and the PFC have done for me. I’ve cornered fighters in several other shows and no show can compare to the PFC hands down,” Gomez said. “My goal is to continue to take things one fight at a time, taking out M16 then takeout whoever on the other side of the bracket and keeping the belt. Anyone in my way must be eliminated. I feel like this fight should have probably been for the title, but I respect what Christian is doing with the division.”
