Brenda Lopez vs Rachel Duangsima

Nov 24, 2003
In what originally looked to be a card packed full of exciting bouts, Shooto limped into Las Vegas having lost a number of fighters including a couple hometown fellas that had been counted on to draw in the local crowds. Alfonso Alcarez did not pass his physical with the Nevada State Athletic commission and Marvin Eastman-scheduled to headline Shooto's maiden foray into the Vegas market-had his opponent fail his physical as well. In a last minute effort to land a fight for Eastman, Shooto was able to secure Frank Mir for what would have been an exhibition kickboxing match but that idea was quickly squashed by Mir's other employer in town, namely UFC president Dana White. Eastman was left without an opponent and the show without its original Main Event. The bad news didn't end there. Only minutes before the event was to start, Jaime Lynn, who was scheduled to fight Erica Montoya, apparently fell off an escalator leading to the ballroom, injuring her ankle and leaving just six bouts left on the card-two kickboxing and four MMA. The event that had started out with so much promise staggered into The Orleans Casino but did manage to deliver with the few fights left. Leading off the show was a kickboxing match between Brenda Lopez and Rachel Duangsima that turned out to be the fight of the night. These ladies showed the talent that is lacking in many women's matches as they slugged it out for three rounds. In what was a very close match, the judges delivered a split decision in favor of Lopez.
