Brad Mohler vs Rob Clarke
LEMOORE, Calif., Aug. 20 -- It was a typical day in Lemoore; the cows were grazing in the fields, the smell of manure hung in the air, and the WEC held their eleventh event at the Palace Indian Gaming Center just outside of downtown. The event was anything but typical, as the festivities were marred by sub par judging, an amateurishly planned 4-man heavyweight tournament, and a lack of any true "Main" event.
If you were to glance at the card as it was two weeks ago, you would have found an event filled with many UFC veterans and future big league competitors. Chris Leben was going to have a war with Steve Heath in the main event. UFC vet Chris "Lights Out" Lytle was set to duke it out with JT Taylor. Gilbert Melendez was to defend his lightweight title against another UFC vet in Rich Crunkilton. Gil Castillo was set to make an appearance, and Bret "The Angry Hick" Bergmark was scheduled to face John Alessio. To the disappointment of the sellout crowd, all of these bouts were scrapped and we were left with an event that was somewhat short of spectacular.
With gas prices at a record high, it was easy to assume that Rob Clark was running on an empty tank by the third round of this preliminary bout. Clark dominated with a superior combination of judo and jiu-jitsu skills that kept Mohler on the defensive for the entirety of the first two rounds.
Brad took advantage of his superior cardio as Clark collapsed when his reserves were empty, leaving an opening which Mohler filled with several strikes from the side mount. The referee put a halt to the bout at 3:59 of round three, declaring Brad Mohler the victor by technical knockout.
It should be duly noted that Clark's corner threw in the towel at about 3:45 of the round, but it took the referee a good 15 seconds and the assistance of the crack security team to stop the fight.
