The main event of the evening had San Diego grappling deity, Dean Lister moving up in weight (ahem… not cutting his usual amount) to take on Jeremy Horn for his 205 pound title. The fight was close with Horn escaping and launching counter attacks throughout the entire bout. I was impressed that Horn was able to stave off Lister's ground attack and even launch a ground offensive of his own on occasion. Lister on the other hand did land some good kicks standing and took Horn down at will. In the end it was horn winning the majority decision and retaining his belt.
The only real submission threat to Lister was a triangle attempt by Horn early in the first round. Although Lister escaped the sub, it was not before Horn landed a stiff elbow opening up a large cut on Lister's hairline. This cut flowed for the entire fight, drenching both fighters in red slime. After the fight Lister told me that the cut was the most contributing factor to his loss.
"It was like looking through a greasy windshield" Lister stated about his ability to see in the fight.
Lister admitted that the loss of blood not only impaired his vision but tired him as well. "I lost a lot of blood, and I did gas in the third". Lister told me when describing his experience fighting Horn. He went on to say that he came back stronger in the fourth round.
On Horn's striking Lister said "I hit him harder, but he hit me more and came at me more aggressively".
Lister felt that the fight was close and could have gone either way. On some people saying that Horn won every round Lister states "That is absurd".
On losing the fight Lister said "I was upset but I knew I didn't wuss out. This is only my seventh fight. I will be constantly improving and getting better. Props to my opponent".
I asked Lister if he still keeps his 185 pound title and he said "I don't think so, I think I had to give it up. But titles don't mean much to me".
Lister says the cut got infected and now he looks like Sloth from the movie, The Goonies. I wouldn't worry too much about Dean though. He'll be spending the Holidays in Brazil with his new girlfriend, Flavia.
