Jeff Curran vs Matt Serra

Jan 31, 2004
Before a sold-out Mandalay Bay Events Center, UFC 46-Super Natural delivered technique, power, pure aggression and more than its share of odd twists and unbelievable turns. The 11,405 in attendance witnessed a roller coaster ride of emotions, starting with a dynamic debut from "Lightning" Lee Murray and ending with an unavoidable letdown with the premature end to the light heavyweight title fight between Vitor "The Phenom" Belfort and Randy "The Natural" Couture. Barely missing a home run with this show, we will see if Zuffa can do something they haven't been able to do yet, carry the momentum from one stellar show to the next. Let's take a look at the night's action. Leading things off was battle of lightweights between Matt Serra and Jeff Curran. The first round was a technical battle that saw Serra score well from the top position while Curran defended well. The second round saw Serra come out with a powerful body-lock takedown and quickly pass from side control to knee on belly and to mount. Curran reestablished his half guard and did his best to defend the Serra offensive. The fighters could not carry on the high octane pace that was set through the first two rounds and the fight considerably slowed in the third. Serra controlled the round and won a unanimous decision with 30-27 scores on all the judge's cards.
