Nick Ertl vs Nam Phan

Aug 26, 2004
Nick Ertl defeated Nam Phan Decision (Split) 5:00 3R In what was the most controversial bout of the night, Nam Phan was announced the winner of a fight that, according to everyone in attendance, was actually won by Nick Ertl. The fight mostly consisted of Ertl scoring points by repeatedly taking Phan to his back and launching effective ground-and-pound techniques. Although very few of Ertl's strikes were damaging, it was enough to keep the fight grounded and render Phan's guard purely defensive. Phan seemed very content to just sit back and block the strikes, occasionally launching the rare elbow attack up at his opponent. Phan did attempt a few overhands during the standup portion. Ertl's defense was solid, however, as he neutralized most of the attacks. Once the fight ended, the crowd was shocked when the fight was initially announced as a split decision. To add to the confusion, it was then announced that Nam Phan was the winner, a move which left everyone in attendance in disbelief. After the event had reached completion, it was revealed by WEC president Reed Harris that there was a mix up in the scoring, which resulted in the win being mistakenly awarded to Nam Phan. The error was fixed with Ertl taking home the winner's purse along with the recently fixed win on his record, and Nam Phan most likely looking to reclaim the tee-shirts that he mistakenly threw out into the crowd.
