The most puzzling “fight” of the night

Jun 27, 2004
After a brief intermission came the most puzzling “fight” of the night (and anyone who was there knows why fight is in quotations). In Honolulu there is an awful, second or third tier professional wrestling federation called HCW (Hawaiian Championship Wrestling). You can take a look at the round, shapely figures of the “fighters” and get an idea of the athleticism and talent that they possess. At any rate, this encounter was billed as professional wrestlers in an MMA setting, with the promoter mentioning that these were the first two HCW competitors to agree to such a match. The guys proceeded to do the standard schtick: bad guy gets the upper hand on local favorite, local favorite eventually prevails through superhuman effort, bad guy pretends to congratulate local favorite after fight, only to sucker-punch him after he’s off guard. At this point the bad guy (Kenjiro, I think he was called) heads out of the ring and steals a fan’s chair. The fan got pissed and followed the guy to the ring to get his chair back, but was stopped from getting into the ring. Everyone in the audience knew what to expect from the chair being in the ring, except perhaps the referee, who alarmingly took the chair away from Kenjiro while the bad guy was trying to explain that this was what was supposed to happen. After this exchange, the promoter of the event had to call the ref over to explain to him not to take the chair, that it was part of the act, before Kenjiro was finally allowed to get his whap on against local boy Kaniela. This prompted rage from the overwhelmingly local (and intoxicated) crowd, and several fights erupted throughout the crowd. A slew of security guards got things under control quickly, but not quickly enough to keep the doctor seated about 2 feet to my right from getting nailed in the head with a battery thrown by some unknown moron in the back (but if you’re reading, moron, then you know who you are). All in all, this “match” was an utter disaster and will hopefully not be repeated at subsequent events.
