SUNRISE, Fla. -- Sparks flew between
Kevin "Kimbo Slice" Ferguson and
Ken Shamrock, while
Gina Carano nearly bared all at Friday’s official weigh-in for EliteXC “Heat” at the BankAtlantic Center.
The muscular Ferguson tipped the scales at 234.5 pounds in advance of his main event showdown with Shamrock (206.5) on Saturday and then promptly turned his back on the UFC hall of famer. The 44-year-old Shamrock responded with a stout shove. “Don’t turn your back on me,” Shamrock yelled, touching off a brief scuffle that EliteXC officials were quick to quell.
Ferguson, EliteXC’s top draw, has not competed since May, when he survived a stern test from
James Thompson and stopped the Pride Fighting Championships veteran on third-round strikes. Having risen to prominence through unsanctioned back-alley street fights that made their rounds on YouTube, the 34-year-old Ferguson made quick work of his first two professional opponents --
Bo Cantrell and
David "Tank" Abbott.
Shamrock, clinging to his last shred of respectability, has lost five consecutive fights, seven of his last eight and eight of his past 10. He last fought in March, when he succumbed to strikes against British journeyman
Robert "Buzz" Berry at Cage Rage 25. Shamrock has not tasted victory since he knocked out
Kimo Leopoldo with a first-round knee at UFC 48 in June of 2004.

Kimbo Slice looked ripped at
234.5 pounds.
Meanwhile, Carano’s struggles to make weight continued.
The undefeated Carano was forced to disrobe after she twice failed to meet the 141-pound weight requirement for her match with
Kelly Kobald (141). The noticeably weakened muay Thai sensation weighed 141 on her third try and retreated to the staging area.
EliteXC welterweight champion
Jake Shields (169.75) and his challenger,
Paul Daley (170), had no such trouble. Like Ferguson and Shamrock, however, the two men had to be separated after an intense nose-to-nose stare down led to shoves on both sides.
The weigh-in for the anticipated heavyweight match pairing former UFC champion
Andrei Arlovski (240.75) with one-time International Fight League titleholder
Roy Nelson (262.75) was far more cordial. Both big men made weight without incident.
The competitors for the first two bouts on the CBS telecast --
Benji Radach (185),
Murilo "Ninja" Rua (185),
Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos (148.5) and
Yoko Takahashi (148.5) -- also met their weight requirements. Newcomer
Nicolae Cury (161.25) failed to make weight for his lightweight
Jorge Boechat (159.5), though Boechat agreed to the fight without penalty.
