UFC 48 - Payback Weighins
Friday, June 18, 2004
by Greg Savage (greg@sherdog.com)

Ken Shamrock will be giving up 26 pounds to Kimo Leopoldo but he seemed as confident as could be as he stepped from the scale for the square off photo op. Shamrock, who weighed in at 218 pounds, seemed surprised as the commissioner called out his weight. Kimo, down to a lean 244 pounds, looked ready to go.

Frank Trigg tipped the scales at 169 pounds for his rematch with Dennis Hallman. He claimed this was the easiest cut he had ever had and attributed it to his newfound dehydration tool, red wine. Hallman weighed an even 170 pounds and alluded to their controversial first bout when he covered his groin as he and Trigg matched up for the crowd. Watch out for some extra-curricular activity in this one as the bad blood is about to boil over.

Former UFC heavyweight champ Tim Sylvia weighed in at 263 pounds while his opponent Frank Mir registered a weight of 253. Both men were in good spirits and why wouldn’t they be, one of these fighters will walk away with UFC gold come Saturday night.

Matt Hughes returns to the Octagon for the first time after his stunning upset loss to BJ Penn this past January. Hughes weighed in at 170 for his welterweight bout with Renato “Charuto” Verissimo. “Charuto”, a stable-mate of Penn, weighed 170.5 pounds.

The highlight of the weigh-ins had to be the antics of Evan Tanner’s second, Matt Lindland. “The Law” followed Tanner onto the dais holding a pair of tiny daisy duke shorts high over his head. Phil Baroni, who weighed in at a ripped 183.5, much to his credit, kept his legendary temper in check even when Lindland tossed the shorts at him. Tanner looked to be in good shape as well as he weighed in at 185.5 pounds.
