Winner, Stapel On Weight for FX3
Friday, November 23, 2007
by Jim Page (jpage@sherdog.com)

Hot prospect Andre Winner (Pictures) is back to defend his FX3 lightweight title Saturday in a stern test against German challenger Mario Stapel (Pictures).

The champion tipped the scales comfortably below the 155-pound weight limit. Stapel, however, was forced back to the sauna after his initial weigh-in attempt, but he soon shed the last couple of pounds.

Looking to bounce back from his knockout loss to Duane "Bang" Ludwig in November, Stapel will try to put his Brazilian jiu-jitsu to work and get himself back on the winning track.

Winner, though, has a knack for keeping things standing. His sharp striking and vicious clinch work make him a slight favorite to walk away with his belt.

The middleweight encounter between Brian Adams (Pictures) and Sebastian Baron (Pictures) has the makings of a war. Things appeared quite friendly on the surface at the weigh-in, but there was deep underlying tension between the two fighters, who both smiled politely but were just about hiding gritted teeth.

Former kickboxer Glen Johnson looked monstrous as he weighed in at 226 pounds of shredded muscle for his clash with 40-year-old ground-and-pound specialist Kev Simms.

This clash of styles between the two proud tough guys promises fireworks. "The Militant" should definitely try to keep Simms at a distance if he hopes to make it a successful debut.

David Swann and promoter-turned-fighter Jay Gilbey (Pictures) were in high spirits, laughing and joking in front of the cameras, as they looked forward to their hastily arranged scrap.

Their demeanors will change when the two fierce competitors step in the cage. Gilbey's aggression seems here to stay after his recent win at Angrrr Management, and Swann is keen to get back into action after some time away from the sport.
