Earlier in the week, I dutifully reported the infection of MMA personalities and techniques into professional wrestling theater: Sunday’s TNA pay per view event had hybrid athlete Bobby Lashley enjoying a “submission” contest with Samoa Joe. While I found the idea moronic and expressed an ignorance of the appeal in watching someone apply fake grappling holds, I also petitioned readers to enlighten me. Choice excerpts -- including a winner -- after the jump. ... Read More
This is the part where I tell you I don’t like professional wrestling, do not watch professional wrestling, and do not possess the neurological tools necessary to understand professional wrestling. It exists beyond my ability to appreciate it. In deference to pro wrestling fans that are consistently embittered by my reaction to grown men in role-play situations, it’s possible I’m simply not intellectual enough to spot the sport’s nuances. I’m sure this is it.

Opinions on Nov. 21’s Brock Lesnar-Shane Carwin meeting -- more demolition derby than fight considering their combined five hundred-something pounds -- aren’t in short supply. But no observers have quite the same perspective as Ron Waterman, Carwin’s high school wrestling coach and Lesnar’s roommate during a developmental stint in a WWE training league.
Waterman, 16-6 as a pro and a massively-built collegiate wrestler in his own right, fights Bobby Lashley in November. He spoke with Sherdog.com about choosing sides in a month that’s quickly turning into a Toho film. ... Read More
“Hosting” a professional wrestling event is not the world’s most appealing resume bullet point, but if you’re Floyd Mayweather, it’s probably irrelevant: in an effort to appeal to that demographic to hype his Sept. 19 bout with Juan Manuel Marquez, Mayweather will be appearing on the WWE’s “Monday Night Raw” program tonight on the USA Network. And considering he has that fight in four weeks, it’s unlikely he’ll be taking any steel chairs to his face.
If you find yourself lost in the narrative, consider that Aaron Glazer, a writer for the Examiner dot.com site, wrote, “Randy Orton has been bullying Guest Hosts for weeks, even going so far as to attack Freddy Prinze, Jr.” Things are clearly coming to a head.
Not an unwise move for Mayweather, who would categorically love to chair a “victory” for boxing in a head-to-head revenue comparison on the 19th. It’s also a feat that’s not likely to be duplicated by the UFC, which has long held a slightly hypocritical attitude toward Vince McMahon’s theatrics. ... Read More

I’m sure you’ve heard the news by now: according to researchers, fat babies have a 40% greater chance of becoming fat toddlers.
Of significantly less consequence is the report that Fedor Emelianenko has signed a three-fight deal with Strikeforce that’s likely to begin in the fall. The common reaction from both fans and UFC honchos has been the idea that Emelianenko simply isn’t interested in testing himself against top competition.
For the sake of argument: while the UFC holds a majority share of quality heavyweights, the idea that Emelianenko’s legacy will be tainted by never making eye contact with them is a stretch.
Consider:
Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira: A non-entity where Emelianenko is concerned. He loses a fourth fight only if he fractures both his hands against Nogueira’s skull. ... Read More
