LOS ANGELES, June 1 -- Dehydrated from cutting 15 pounds in 15 hours, welterweight Jake Shields (Pictures) could barely find the energy to pace inside the Wilshire Grand Hotel as weigh-ins for Saturday's "Dynamite!! USA" card were delayed two hours while the promoter, FEG, scrambled to fill out necessary paperwork.
At 3 p.m., Shields and the card's 19 other fighters finally stepped on the scale.
Brock Lesnar (Pictures) looked huge in the upper body as the former pro wrestler weighed in at 262 pounds. Replacing Lesnar's original opponent, Hong-Man Choi, South Korean Min Soo Kim (Pictures) did not appear to be in the
best of shape at 255 pounds.
"I'm well prepared for any South Korean that they put in front of me Saturday night," said Lesnar.
Royce Gracie (Pictures), however, appeared to be as fit as he's ever been at 188 pounds. Japanese legend Kazushi Sakuraba (Pictures), who wore a wide smile -- both on his face and stomach -- came in at 187 pounds. The rematch of an
epic clash in 2000 is being fought at a catch-weight of 195 pounds.
Two other fights on the card featured catch-weights as well.
Having to make 219 pounds, former NFL wide receiver Johnny Morton, who returns Saturday to his old college stomping grounds at the L.A. Memorial Coliseum, looked huge at 213 pounds. His opponent, Bernard Ackah (Pictures) stood on the scale a ripped 207.
Both Melvin Manhoef (Pictures) and Dong Sik Yoon (Pictures) were required to make 198 pounds. They did, easily.
The only moment of controversy came when Gesias Calvancanti (Pictures) was listed at 160 pounds for his lightweight contest against Nam Phan (Pictures). Calvancanti was re-weighed moments later and came in at 158.
With the CSAC did not require Calvancanti to cut any further weight, Phan's camp asked for clarification and they were informed that it would be up to the promoter to enforce the contract weight limit.
However, as a penalty for failing to make weight, the CSAC would force Calvancanti to forfeit 20 percent of his purse evenly to Phan and the commission.
