In The Gym: UFC Champ Hughes Gears Up for GSP

Nov 17, 2006

If you've missed our previous ITG's with Matt Hughes (Pictures), now is your chance to step inside the storied Miletich camp and get an in-depth look at how the UFC welterweight champion has prepared and game planned for one of the most dangerous bouts of his career.

In 44 professional fights, Hughes has shown himself to be perhaps the most dominant mixed martial artist in the sport's modern history.

Few times has the farmer from Hillsboro, Ill. stepped into the Octagon with the outcome in doubt. Saturday at the ARCO Arena in Sacramento, Calif., where the champ defends his title versus a well-deserved and highly-respected No. 1 contender in Montreal's Georges St. Pierre (Pictures), marks one of those rare moments.

Sherdog Insider visited the 33-year-old Hughes at his Iowa training camp in the weeks leading up to the anticipated rematch. The confident 170-pounder, who told Sherdog.com's Greg Savage that a year from now he may not be fighting anymore, sparred on the feet with trainer Pat Miletich (Pictures) and rolled on the mat with the likes of Robbie Lawler (Pictures) and Spencer Fisher (Pictures).

Also Hughes, Miletich and boxing trainer Matt Pena break down what needs to happen in order for Hughes to survive the confident French Canadian.
