In The ... Pit: A Look at Liddell's Infamous Camp

Aug 25, 2006

You may have heard of The Pit. But have you ever seen it? If not, don't feel bad. Most people haven't.

The UFC light heavyweight champion granted Sherdog Insider an exclusive look at his outdoor training camp in the foothills of Arroyo Grande, Calif.

Midway between Los Angeles and San Francisco sits the home of trainer John Hackleman, which for the past 15 years has doubled as a proving ground for some of combat sports' toughest fighters.

Liddell, easily the best known of Hackleman's bunch, has displayed the traits of the no-frills crew during a pro MMA career spanning 21 fights (18-3-0).

Blasting opponents with a right hand many consider to be the single most dangerous weapon in MMA, Liddell finds himself atop the 205-pound heap. To stay there he'll need to defeat tough Brazilian Renato Sobral (Pictures).
