Gray Maynard said he was surprised to get the text telling him he’d face Roger Huerta next at UFC Fight Night 19 on Sept. 16 in Oklahoma City, Okla.
“I was like, ‘that’s a weird name, but I’ll take it,’” said Maynard, who has notched five straight wins in the UFC. “I was looking for somebody like maybe Diego (Sanchez) or Clay (Guida)… It’s cool though. I’m happy. He’s got a big name.”
Maynard, 30, said he’s requested fights with Sanchez and former lightweight champion Sean Sherk on a number of occasions, but understands its all in the timing as he heads into his 7th bout of nine-fight deal he signed with the promotion after appearing on “The Ultimate Fighter 5.”
The three-time NCAA All-American wrestler for Michigan State names Huerta’s most dangerous asset and handicaps his progress in the UFC’s stacked lightweight division as he hovers just outside the contender’s circle.
