LOS ANGELES, Sept. 28 -- Lightweight Gilbert Melendez (Pictures) is itching for a fight. Ten months removed from his last outing, and 15 months since he defeated Clay Guida (Pictures) to claim the Strikeforce lightweight title, Melendez returns Saturday in the main event of Strikeforce's latest venture, which also happens to be the debut of MMA at the Playboy Mansion.
"I haven't left the gym, that's where I live" said Melendez, who was sidelined while Zuffa determined what it was going to do with PRIDE. "It's definitely frustrating working for free."
Melendez looks to take out his frustration on Japanese veteran Tetsuji Kato (Pictures).
"I'm expecting a really good fight," said the Strikeforce champ, who fights at the Playboy Mansion in a non-title affair. "Everyone's like, 'oh, Gil, you're gonna beat this guy.' Whatever. I'm not stupid. I trained hard. I know this is his opportunity to get his face back in the game. I know he thinks he can beat me and I know I think I can beat him. I'm not going to underestimate a guy who had a really tough split [decision] with (Hayato) Sakurai and fought Anderson Silva really tough and fought 170s. Not at all."
Streamed live on the Internet via Yahoo! starting at 9 p.m. EST/12 a.m. EST, "Strikeforce at the Mansion" features 12 bouts.
