Demian Maia knew he could ill-afford to lose to Jorge Masvidal in their pivotal welterweight showdown, but he was unable to take out his foe.
For three rounds, the two fought an extremely tactical battle, with each man barely giving an inch. Masvidal landed the better strikes on the feet and, as expected, Maia was better on the ground. The Brazilian tried to secure a rear-naked choke on multiple occasions, but “Gamebred” fended them all off. In the end, Maia’s sub attempts and timely takedowns were the difference as he walked out of the Octagon as the victor of a split decision win. He won via tallies of 28-29 and 29-28 (twice).
