LAS VEGAS, Oct. 18 Days away from its first promotion on U.S. soil, PRIDE held the second of three open workouts for Saturday's "Real Deal" card.
Staged outside at Caesars Palace Roman Plaza, PRIDE 205-pound champion Wanderlei Silva (Pictures) substituted for his compatriot Mauricio Rua (Pictures), who decided against breaking a sweat in the crisp desert air before his scheduled bout with Kevin Randleman (Pictures) at the Thomas & Mack Center.
In front of several hundred bemused spectators, most of whom stumbled upon the open workout while trudging along this city's famed Strip, "The Axe Murderer" played patty cake on focus mitts before offering an impromptu half-speed sparring session with Chute Boxe trainer Rafael Cordeiro (Pictures).
Following 15 minutes of light-hearted work, Silva thanked the spectators for taking the time to stop and indicated he would fight February in Las Vegas as part of PRIDE's second American offering. Not surprisingly, Silva also reaffirmed his desire to face UFC light heavyweight champion Chuck Liddell (Pictures).
PRIDE officials hurried Chute Boxe out of the area so Randleman could have his moment in front of the people. The session's tone immediately changed when the intense 205-pounder stormed around the area, slapping hands with onlookers who were parked along the fence intended to separate the "Monster" from the people.
When he wasn't indiscriminately yelling, Randleman worked up a healthy sweat while he and his mentor Mark Coleman (Pictures) grappled on the slick white canvas.
After working out, Randleman brought a youngster into the ring to pose for pictures. Pretending to beat up the boy, both Randleman and Coleman elicited the sort of amused applause a crowd might offer a politician who just kissed a baby.
Thursdays public workout, scheduled for between 4-6 p.m., focuses on PRIDE heavyweight champion Fedor Emelianenko (Pictures) and his opponent, Mark "The Hammer" Coleman.
