On Nov. 3, 2001, Pride Fighting Championships was in Tokyo for Pride 17.

In the main event, Wanderlei Silva defeated Kazushi Sakuraba via slam to win the inaugural middleweight title. Also on the card, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira defeated Heath Herring by decision to win the inaugural heavyweight title.

Also on the card, Dan Henderson beat Murilo Rua by split decision, Quinton Jackson knocked out Yuki Ishikawa in the first round and opening up the main card was Renzo Gracie getting back into the win column with a decision win over Michiyoshi Ohara.
