Daniel Cormier Discusses ‘Very Competitive’ Wrestling Sessions with Cain Velasquez
By: Sherdog.com Staff
Daniel Cormier, on “Beatdown,” discussing how his wrestling training sessions go with American Kickboxing Academy teammate Cain Velasquez:
“It’s pretty close. It’s pretty close now. It’s pretty close. ... It’s very competitive. Cain’s a good wrestler. It’s not like he’s just some guy with average wrestling skill. If he would have continued to wrestle post-college, I think he would have been one of the guys that was in the mix to make an Olympic team. He’s a very good wrestler, and being that we have wrestled so much, things change. When you wrestle a guy that much, it’s really hard to even score a takedown sometimes. Sometimes I can’t even get a takedown through the whole day of training. It’s very hard. Sometimes we’ll wrestle five-minute rounds, and there will be no takedowns. Outside of him being extremely intense and the pace that he wrestles at is so high, he’s a very, very good wrestler. Good technically and strong and big.” -
Daniel Cormier: I Don’t Want to Fight Cain Velasquez, But There Are Options
By: Sherdog.com Staff
Daniel Cormier, on “Beatdown,” discussing whether he’d fight teammate Cain Velasquez:
“I don’t want to fight Cain. That’s something we all discussed as a team, and there are options. There are options. It doesn’t always necessarily have to boil down to whether or not we would fight each other or how it’s going to work out. There are options out there that we discuss as a team internally and then [we’ll] let you guys know after the decision’s made.”

Cain Velasquez’s Trainer Thinks Antonio Silva Is Being Underestimated
By: Sherdog.com Staff
Trainer Bob Cook, on “The Savage Dog Show,” discussing Cain Velasquez’s UFC 146 bout against Antonio Silva: “I think if [Daniel Cormier] hadn’t have done what he did to [Silva], there would be much different talk [about] this fight. If he had never fought D.C. and this was coming off that Fedor fight and he was now fighting Cain, the hype that would be on this fight would be incredible. Everybody would be saying, ‘This is going to be an eliminator fight. It’s going to be this huge fight.’ But because D.C. took care of him the way that he did, I think people are underestimating Antonio Silva on what his accomplishments have been in the past.”

Fans Drawn to Velasquez's Story, Success
By: Carlos Arias
Cain Velasquez is developing a following. | Photo: Daniel Herbertson
Julio Cesar Chavez used to get mobbed when walking down Olvera Street in Los Angeles to promote one of his fights.
The Mexican and Mexican-American fans loved Chavez's willingness to fight anyone, anytime, anywhere. Chavez would leave everything he had in the ring.
The same was true for Marco Antonio Barrera and Erik Morales. Win or lose, the fans loved these fighters because they were willing to go out on their shields.
UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez (9-0) seems to be developing that kind of following, as evidenced by hundreds of fans who showed up for a news conference at Nokia Plaza to promote Velasquez’s fight against Junior dos Santos (13-1) on Saturday at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT at the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif. -- the UFC's debut on Fox.
