Longtime Ultimate Fighting Championship welterweight titleholder Georges St. Pierre will defend his crown against Johny Hendricks in the UFC 167 main event on Nov. 16 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas. St. Pierre sidestepped a blockbuster bout with middleweight champion Anderson Silva in favor of a matchup with the bearded Oklahoman, drawing some criticism from UFC President Dana White.
“It’s a big fight; it’s a legacy fight,” White told MMAWeekly.com. “It’s a fight for the pound-for-pound best in the world. What’s crazy to me is GSP opted to take a very dangerous fight [against Hendricks] at 170 [pounds] without trying to take a dangerous fight [against Silva] at 185.”
St. Pierre has maintained a stranglehold on the UFC welterweight division since April 19, 2008. The 32-year-old French Canadian has rattled off 11 consecutive victories, the last six of them five-round decisions. St. Pierre last appeared at UFC 158 in March, when he cruised to a unanimous verdict over former Strikeforce champion Nick Diaz at the Bell Centre in Montreal.
Hendricks was a four-time NCAA All-American wrestler at Oklahoma State University, where he won two national titles. Backed by that wrestling pedigree and a devastating left hand, the 29-year-old Team Takedown representative will enter the cage on a six-fight winning streak, having emerged as the clear No. 1 contender at 170 pounds.

Mike Tyson is a big MMA fan, as evidenced by his presence at UFC 160 this past weekend. The former boxing champion even had a say in the evening’s post-fight bonuses, urging Dana White to award T.J. Grant “Knockout of the Night” for his stoppage of Gray Maynard.
Tyson also recently spent some time with welterweight title contender Johny Hendricks at Cobra Kai Jiu-Jitsu in Las Vegas. “Iron Mike” gives “Bigg Rigg” a few pointers in the video below.

Trainer Firas Zahabi, on “Cheap Seats,” discussing how Georges St. Pierre would approach a bout against Johny Hendricks:
“I think Georges has to neutralize his left hand. He absolutely has to get away, and it’s not going to be an easy thing to do. We’re going to have to put our heads together and try to figure out what to do. It’s not about just being defensive, that’s for sure. You can’t sit there and hope a left hand doesn’t land. You have to put your opponent on defense. That’s the safest way to win a fight: always be the guy who’s attacking and force your opponent into a defensive mind frame and a defensive mode. That’s the best. We’re going to have to look at Johny’s fights and review him and try to dissect him and see what would be a good approach.”
