  • Johny Hendricks Rooting for Georges St. Pierre Against Nick Diaz By: Sherdog.com Staff

Johny Hendricks, on “Beatdown,” discussing the UFC 158 welterweight title bout between Georges St. Pierre and Nick Diaz:

“I want GSP to win because I want to fight GSP. Don’t get me wrong: If Diaz wins, then I’ll want to fight Nick Diaz. But I would like to really fight GSP right now. ... I’m in it for a belt. He’s done this to me, and if he goes out there and loses, I’m not going to say, ‘I want to fight GSP. I don’t want a belt. I want to fight GSP.’ I want a shot at the title. That’s all that matters to me is taking that belt home.”

Georges St. Pierre has no shortage of potential challengers. | Brian Townsend/Sherdog.com

It seems as if everyone wants a crack at UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre, from longtime middleweight king Anderson Silva to surging 170-pound contender Johny Hendricks. Firas Zahabi, St. Pierre’s trainer at the Tristar Gym in Montreal, has thrown another name into the mix: Nick Diaz.

Everyone knows no love loss exists between St. Pierre and the polarizing former Strikeforce champion. Diaz has repeatedly baited “Rush” from afar, calling into question everything from his ability to his courage. The 29-year-old Cesar Gracie protégé last competed at UFC 143 in February, when he dropped a unanimous decision to Carlos Condit in a welterweight title eliminator.

Afterward, Diaz was suspended for one year after testing positive for marijuana metabolites. The loss to Condit halted the Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt’s career-best 11-fight winning streak, which included victories against former two-division UFC champion B.J. Penn, British striker Paul Daley and onetime UFC middleweight champion Frank Shamrock.

Nick Diaz is serving a year-long suspension. | Photo: Sherdog.com

In the midst of a one-year suspension, former Strikeforce champion Nick Diaz will be eligible to return to the Octagon in February.

Diaz last fought eight months ago at UFC 143, where he dropped a unanimous decision to Carlos Condit in a five-round interim welterweight title bout at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas. The 29-year-old Cesar Gracie protégé subsequently tested positive for marijuana metabolites and received a one-year ban from the Nevada Athletic Commission.

What comes next for Diaz if and when he returns remains anyone’s guess. Other topics of interest on the Sherdog.net forums this week include center on Condit’s strategy against Diaz, the state of boxing in MMA, Joe Rogan’s stare at UFC weigh-ins and Ariel Helwani’s interview with Jason Miller.

  • Cesar Gracie: Nick Diaz Shouldn’t Be Criticized for Willingness to Fight Anderson Silva By: Sherdog.com Staff

Cesar Gracie, on “Beatdown,” discussing Nick Diaz’s willingness to fight Anderson Silva:

“Look, Anderson Silva wants to fight GSP. GSP’s not fighting him. If Anderson Silva really wants to drop down a weight, maybe fight at a catch weight or something, well, Nick is willing to step up and fight the guy. I don’t think that should be criticized. A fighter wanting to fight should never be criticized. People find a reason to criticize anything: ‘Who does Nick think he is?’ A fighter wanting to fight should not be criticized.”

B.J. Penn fought Jon Fitch to a stalemate at UFC 127 in February 2011. A rematch was scheduled for UFC 132 five months later, but Fitch was forced to withdraw with a shoulder injury and a second bout between the two never materialized. Now, the 34-year-old welterweight has taken aim at Penn’s character.

Other topics on the Sherdog.net forums this week include Jean Claude Van Damme’s foray into MMA training, UFC President Dana White’s take on testosterone replacement therapy, Alexander Gustafsson’s thoughts on a potential matchup with Mauricio Rua and skepticism regarding Nick Diaz’s accomplishments.
