  • The Turning Point: Diaz vs. Daley By: Chris Nelson

The vaunted chin of Nick Diaz survived its most onerous test of Diaz’s reign as Strikeforce welterweight champion Saturday night, while another of the Californian’s hallmarks ensured that he left San Diego with gold intact.

Diaz and challenger Paul Daley put forth the type of vicious firefight most expected inside the Valley View Casino Center, but the confrontation truly began on Friday, when the notorious trash-talkers exchanged epithets at the official weigh-ins. The tension was evident immediately before the bout, when Daley grinned at Diaz as referee John McCarthy gave final instructions, evoking further verbiage from the titlist.

Five seconds into the bout, Diaz was into his usual routine, inching gingerly forward and chatting with Daley while offering up his jaw to the British slugger. Backing Daley into the fence, Diaz popped his challenger with a right jab, then hurled a left to the body. Early in the round, the sequence took little effect; in the end, it proved Diaz’s best friend.

Nick Diaz: Dave Mandel | Sherdog.com

Because it’s frequently difficult to understand the theme of a Nick Diaz speech, I may be misinterpreting his apparent distaste for MMA in a video interview for Fight! magazine. (Exclamation point theirs.) If you can’t be bothered to watch Diaz spin nunchucks around for several minutes -- and you should -- it boils down to being good at something he doesn’t necessarily enjoy.

“I don’t love fighting,” he says. “It’s a living hell…if they paid me to race triathlons as much as they do to fight, I probably wouldn’t fight any more.”

Losing your taste for prizefighting can be as dangerous as losing your physical ability, a fact Mike Tyson put on prominent display when he basically quit out of apathy against Kevin McBride in 2005. Athletes don’t like to say fighting is an emotional career, but it is -- why else would so many of them insist on staying past their expiration date?

Diaz doesn’t seem so detached in the ring, and it’s possible a different day would result in an entirely different answer. But it’s interesting to examine the ability of someone who defies conventional wisdom about becoming proficient. If you don’t love what you do, can you do it well?

Nick Diaz (red gloves) vs. K.J. Noons: Dave Mandel | Sherdog.com

Sometimes, ugly is enough to get the job done.

Saturday, Nick Diaz needed five rounds and another blood-crusted face to best K.J. Noons nearly three years after a doctor stoppage gave Noons a win over him. Neither man was particularly graceful: Diaz could never quite slide into his volume punching that feels worse than it looks, and Noons was sometimes channeling Leonard Garcia in KO blows that he threw his entire body into.

It’s not that it was bad striking: it’s that MMA presents too many variables for that striking to ever be as tightly constructed as we see in higher-level boxing matches. Some are going to confuse that for inability, but you do what you have to when takedowns and kicks are part of the equation.

What else did the fight prove? Noons is probably one of MMA’s most skilled boxers, but he’s also undersized for the welterweight division: there’s a world of difference between his frame hitting you and a 185-pound man cutting down. But what he lacks in size he makes up for in speed and technique; Diaz posted one of his better career wins Saturday. The bad news? It might be one of the few remaining significant victories available to him currently in Strikeforce.

  • Diaz Featured in Heyman Hustle Season 2

Sherdog.com spoke exclusively with Hustler De Tuti Hustlers Paul Heyman, whose new 360 Media Agency inked a deal with EA Sports to profile five elite fighters from its upcoming “MMA” title.

Heyman, a legend in the world of pro wrestling and no stranger to mixed martial arts (he nearly threw his hat in the ring with the Strikeforce promotion in 2007 and is currently working on UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar’s autobiography), told Sherdog.com that he was excited to work with compelling personalities like welterweight ace Nick Diaz, who is featured in 360 Media Agency’s first profile for EA.

“I have a lot of respect for MMA,” said CraveOnline.com’s Heyman. “This is the natural progression of what pro wrestling was and what MMA could become from a branding standpoint.”

Heyman teamed with Emmy Award winning director Mitchell K. Stuart to launch season two of “The Heyman Hustle,” which is available for view below.

“Nick Diaz is one of the most controversial figures in MMA today,” said Stuart. “And he's a complete bad ass. So we knew this was going to be explosive!"

Stay tuned to Sherdog.com for more from Heyman in the coming weeks as we approach the Oct. 19 release of EA Sports “MMA.”
