Will Ronda Rousey retire undefeated? | Photo: Dave Mandel/Sherdog.com

Ronda Rousey will defend her Ultimate Fighting Championship women’s bantamweight crown against Alexis Davis at UFC 175 on July 5 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas. The 27-year-old has already stated she plans to retire as an undefeated champion. Can she accomplish the feat?

Rousey has finished all nine of her opponents, eight of them by armbar-induced submission. A bronze medalist in judo at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China, the “Rowdy” one has emerged as a top draw for the UFC. Rousey last appeared at UFC 170 in February, when she needed just 66 seconds to stop Sara McMann with a first-round knee strike to the liver. She also owns victories over former Strikeforce champions Miesha Tate (twice) and Sarah Kaufman.

Davis will enter the most significant match of her career on the streak of five consecutive victories. The 29-year-old Canadian has not fought since she took a split decision over Jessica Eye in February.

Did Ronda Rousey benefit from a premature stoppage at UFC 170? | Photo: Dave Mandel/Sherdog.com

Ronda Rousey retained her Ultimate Fighting Championship women’s bantamweight crown with a first-round technical knockout over Sara McMann in the UFC 170 headliner on Feb. 22 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas. A knee strike to the liver folded McMann 66 seconds into round one, the 2004 Olympic silver medalist beaten for the first time as a professional.

McMann tagged the champion with power punches during their initial exchange, but Rousey closed the distance and trapped her along the cage. Standing elbows and knees opened up the challenger for the fight-ending blow. McMann collapsed to her knees upon absorbing the liver shot, leading referee Herb Dean to intervene on her behalf. Many considered the stoppage premature, but McMann did not dispute it in the immediate aftermath.

  • Podcast: Campbell McLaren, Javi Vazquez on on 'SRN Rewind' By: Sherdog.com Staff

The UFC 170 main event between Ronda Rousey and Sara McMann answered some questions and left others unanswered, and the Sherdog Radio Network "Rewind" analyzed the drivers behind it all.

In the latest installment of "Pro Perspective," host Jack Encarnacao welcomes MMA veteran Javier "Showtime" Vazquez to break down the liver knee from Rousey that left her challenger prone for one critical instant, and how clinching, the bases of wrestling versus judo, lack of head movement, and perhaps luck factored in to the ultimate outcome. Vazquez also puts his finger on the most impressive qualities about Rousey, McMann, Daniel Cormier, and Rory MacDonald.

Then, in a "Down To Business" segment, Jack is joined once again by original UFC producer Campbell McLaren to discuss his new MMA venture "Combate Americas," which premieres on the Spanish-language channel mun2 this week. McLaren discusses the points of differentiation between marketing MMA to the Hispanic audience versus an en masse audience, the niche appeal potential of the sport, and lessons learned from his ill-fated "Iron Ring" venture on BET.

Ronda Rousey improved to 9-0 at UFC 170. | Photo: Dave Mandel/Sherdog.com

Ronda Rousey successfully defended the Ultimate Fighting Championship women’s bantamweight crown with a first-round technical knockout against Sara McMann in the UFC 170 main event on Saturday at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas. However, it was not without controversy. McMann succumbed to a knee strike to the body and follow-up punches 66 seconds into round one, as the 2004 Olympic silver medalist experienced defeat for the first time in her professional career. Afterward, the focus was not on Rousey or McMann. Instead, it had shifted to referee Herb Dean, whose decision to halt the bout was called into question. Widely regarded as one of the sport’s premier officials, Dean was also at the center of controversy at UFC 169 on Feb. 1. There, he intervened on behalf of Urijah Faber in his bid to unseat UFC bantamweight champion Rena Barao. UFC 170 “Rousey vs. McMann” spawned a number of threads on the Sherdog.net forums:
