Nothing in MMA signifies defeat quite like the submission, an open, visible and at times audible concession that the other man was the better man.

Since the day the Ultimate Fighting Championship was born into existence, the threat of the submission has had an undeniable presence in the sport. It started with Royce Gracie at UFC 1 and progressed from there. Strikers and wrestlers were forced to adapt, to learn to defend their necks, their arms and their legs for fear of having a limb snapped, a joint blown apart or the blood cut off from their brains. Nearly 25 years later, submissions still have a special place in MMA. Never was that more apparent than at UFC on Fox 24, where Rose Namajunas took out Michelle Waterson with a rear-naked choke in the co-main event before Demetrious Johnson followed suit by vanquishing Wilson Reis with an armbar in the headliner.
