9. Alex Nicholson vs. Misha Cirkunov

It was an entertaining fight while it lasted, but Cirkunov scrambled to Nicholson’s back and quickly applied a neck crank to force the tap in the second round of their UFC Fight Night encounter. It seemed like a textbook submission, and certainly nothing appeared to be out of the ordinary at first glance. The true horror was revealed through the audio of subsequent replays. When Cirkunov wrapped his arm around Nicholson’s face in an attempt to secure a rear-naked choke, he was across the chin, not the neck. The Latvian squeezed with such force that he snapped Nicholson’s jaw.

An audible, sickening crack could be heard. Stomachs turned. Nicholson, who had recently recovered from a broken jaw, left the stage at the MGM Grand Garden Arena and went home to convalesce yet again. Some guys have the worst luck.
