UFC 50 Preview

Oct 22, 2004
CONCLUSION:

It hardly resembles the card we saw just three weeks ago, but there are some intriguing fights here. Canadian fighters continue to knock on the American cage door. Fryklund, Eastman and Salaverry return after more than a year away from the Octagon and Lutter makes his UFC debut. Hopefully we take a step closer to a few title bouts in an organization where three of their five divisions have no champion. Enjoy the fights!

To recap, my picks are:
Eastman def. Lutter decision R3
Fryklund def. Salaverry TKO R2
Franklin def. Rivera submission R1
Verissimo def. Trigg submission R1
Tanner def. Lawler TKO R3
St. Pierre def. Hughes TKO R2
Ortiz def. Cote decision R3

UFC DOWN THE ROAD:

Ken Shamrock/ Ian Freeman: This was supposed to happen some time ago. If would be a relatively safe fight for Ken and Ian wants back in badly.

Tre Telligman/John Marsh: That could have been the fight of the night at UFC 50. They should go at it when Marsh is healthy.

Phil Baroni/ Robbie Lawler: Another fight bandied about but never signed. Would Zuffa really risk a poster boy vs. poster boy confrontation? Probably not.

Gustavo Machado/ Chris Leben: Both very exciting middleweights and neither has been in the Octagon.

Joseph Riggs/Andrei Semenov: The Red Devil is 5-2-2 since leaving the UFC. He and Riggs would guarantee stand-up fire works.

Murilo Rua/ Chael Sonnen: Rumor has it Murilo wants to be in the UFC. If Zuffa gets lucky and signs him, Sonnen is a very tough customer in need of a big fight to change his luck.

Olaf Alfonso/Kultar Gil: Two exciting lightweights who can grapple and strike may add some interest to this fading division.

Rich Crunkilton/Matt Serra: Let Matt fight against someone his own size who can really test him on the mat. Rich hasn't fought since his bout against Franca at UFC 42.

Andre Arlovski/ Bazigit Atajev: RTT member "Volk" Atajev has just one loss and has KO'd more than a dozen opponents. Put these two in a cage and someone's going out on a stretcher.

Mikey Burnett/ Aaron Riley: "The East Side Assassin" is supposed to return to the cage as part of the Lion's Den Renaissance. I'm sure Riley would give him a real warm welcome back to competition.
