By The Numbers: Jairzinho Rozenstruik vs. Augusto Sakai

It sometimes feels as though the Ultimate Fighting Championship long ago adopted a tried-and-true matchmaking policy: When in doubt, choose heavyweights.

Two aspiring Top 10 contenders will lock horns when Jairzinho Rozenstruik faces Augusto Sakai in the UFC Fight Night 189 headliner this Saturday at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. Rozenstruik started his career with 10 consecutive victories but has since lost twice in three outings. He last competed at UFC Fight Night 186 on Feb. 27, when he dropped a five-round unanimous decision to Ciryl Gane. Sakai, meanwhile, has put together a run of six wins in seven appearances. He finds himself on the rebound following a fifth-round technical knockout loss to Alistair Overeem at UFC Fight Night 176 in September.

Ahead of the Rozenstruik-Sakai main event, a look at some of the numbers the two heavyweight behemoths have compiled to this point:

33: Years of age for Rozenstruik, who was born on March 17, 1988 in Paramaribo, Suriname—the same hometown as three-time K-1 World Grand Prix champion Remy Bonjasky.

10: Rozenstruik wins by knockout or technical knockout, accounting for 91% of his career total (11). His list of victims includes the aforementioned Overeem, Junior dos Santos and Junior Albini. Rozenstruik owns one other win by decision.

3: Sub-minute stoppage victories on the Rozenstruik resume. He wiped out Robert McCarthy with punches in 10 seconds under the Team Yvel banner on Dec. 27, 2018, brought down Allen Crowder with punches in nine seconds at UFC Fight Night 154 on June 22, 2019 and punched out Andrei Arlovski in 29 seconds at UFC 244 on Nov. 2, 2019.

6: Countries in which Rozenstruik has fought as a mixed martial artist. He has gone 4-2 in the United States, 2-0 in Russia, 2-0 in Suriname, 1-0 in Aruba, 1-0 in Japan and 1-0 in Brazil. Rozenstruik also made appearances in China, Romania, Germany and the Netherlands as a professional kickboxer.

60: Significant strikes by which Rozenstruik was outlanded in his loss to the undefeated Gane. He connected with 42 such strikes against the Frenchman while absorbing 102 in return.

30: Years of age for Sakai, who was born on May 19, 1991 in Curitiba, Brazil, some 6,000 miles from Ultimate Fighting Championship headquarters.

11: Sakai victories by knockout or technical knockout, accounting for 73% of his career total (15). His list of victims includes Marcos Conrado Jr., Daniel Gallemore and Marcin Tybura. Sakai owns four other victories by decision.

5.27: Strikes landed per minute by Sakai since he joined the UFC roster, placing him sixth on the organization’s all-time list for heavyweights. Only Cain Velasquez (6.48), Chase Sherman (6.0), Todd Duffee (5.93), Daniel Cormier (5.39) and Alexander Volkov (5.35) have connected at a higher clip than the Gile Ribeiro protégé.

9: Organizations in which Sakai has competed as a mixed martial artist. He has gone 4-1-1 in Bellator MMA, 4-1 in the UFC, 1-0 in Dana White’s Contender Series, 1-0 in Adventure Fighters Tournament, 1-0 in Power Fight Extreme, 1-0 in Evolution Fight Combat, 1-0 in Samurai Fight Combat, 1-0 Golden Fighters and 1-0 in Imortal Fight Championship.

111: Significant strikes landed by Sakai in his third-round technical knockout of Sherman at UFC Fight Night 137 in September 2018. Having occurred in his promotional debut, it remains a personal benchmark for the Brazilian.
