By The Numbers: Joanna Jedrzejczyk

Brian KnappApr 13, 2020

A whirlwind of alluring charisma, flawless technique and savage violence, Joanna Jedrzejczyk helped establish new boundaries for what was possible in women’s mixed martial arts.

The American Top Team export transitioned to MMA in 2012, rattled off 14 consecutive victories to start her career and reached the pinnacle of the sport less than three years after her debut. Jedrzejczyk laid claim to the undisputed Ultimate Fighting Championship women’s strawweight crown at UFC 185 on March 14, 2015 and went on to make five successful title defenses before being upset by Rose Namajunas. It has been something of a rollercoaster ride in five outings since, as she fell short in her rematch with Namajunas, failed in her bid to capture the flyweight championship from Valentina Shevchenko and wound up on the wrong side of a split decision against current 115-pound titleholder Weili Zhang in a “Fight of the Year” frontrunner. Nevertheless, “Joanna Champion” continues to leave her mark.

As Jedrzejczyk awaits her next assignment, here are some of the numbers that have come to define her:

32: Years of age. Jedrzejczyk was born on Aug. 18, 1987 in Olsztyn, Poland.

5: World championships as an amateur muay Thai practitioner. Jedrzejczyk won those titles in 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013.

1: Submission win on Jedrzejczyk’s resume. She dispatched Liliya Kazak with a first-round rear-naked choke under the Makowski Fighting Championship banner in her second outing as a professional.

10: Appearances in UFC title bouts, most ever by a female mixed martial artist. Jedrzejczyk owns a 6-4 record in those fights, her wins over Carla Esparza, Jessica Penne, Valerie Letourneau, Claudia Gadelha, Karolina Kowalkiewicz and Jessica Andrade offset by losses to Namajunas (twice), Shevchenko and Zhang.

230: Total strikes landed against Andrade at UFC 211, a high-water mark for Jedrzejczyk to this point in her career. She was awarded a unanimous decision over the Brazilian: 50-45, 50-44 and 50-45.

76: Leg strikes landed against Michelle Waterson in the UFC Fight Night 161 main event, the most in a single bout in Ultimate Fighting Championship history.

.860: Cumulative winning percentage for the three women who have defeated Jedrzejczyk.

7: Countries in which Jedrzejczyk has competed as a professional mixed martial artist. She has gone 7-3 in the United States, 4-0 in Poland, 1-1 in Canada, 1-0 in Russia, 1-0 in England, 1-0 in Germany and 1-0 in Australia.

52: Rounds completed in the UFC. Jedrzejczyk has gone the distance 11 times in 14 appearances inside the Octagon, with eight of those bouts going a full 25 minutes.
