By The Numbers: Stefan Struve

Brian KnappAug 29, 2017

Everyone on the Ultimate Fighting Championship roster looks up to Stefan Struve -- literally.

The 6-foot-11 heavyweight contender will step into the spotlight when he meets former Bellator MMA and M-1 Global champion Alexander Volkov in the UFC Fight Night 115 main event this Saturday at Ahoy Rotterdam in Rotterdam, Netherlands. The man who emerges victorious will have put himself in position to challenge one of the division’s primetime players, perhaps before time runs out on 2017. Struve enters the match on a two-fight winning streak. The 29-year-old Bob Schreiber protégé last competed at UFC 204 on Oct. 8, when he submitted Daniel Omielanczuk with a second-round brabo choke in Manchester, England. Struve has compiled a 12-6 record since arriving on the UFC scene a little less than nine years ago.

Over the course of a 36-fight career that now covers upwards of 13 years, the “Skyscraper” has amassed his share of intriguing statistical data:

413: Significant strikes landed in the Ultimate Fighting Championship, according to FightMetric. The figure ranks seventh among active UFC heavyweights behind Junior dos Santos (899), Cain Velasquez (718), Fabricio Werdum (630), Stipe Miocic (626), Andrei Arlovski (498) and Mark Hunt (440).

213: Centimeters in height, making Struve the tallest fighter in UFC history.

129: Cumulative win total of the six men -- dos Santos, Hunt, Roy Nelson, Travis Browne, Alistair Overeem and Jared Rosholt -- who have defeated Struve inside the Octagon.

20: Submissions attempted in UFC competition. It puts Struve second on the promotion’s all-time list for heavyweights, trailing only Frank Mir (21).

17: Victories by submission, including seven by triangle choke, four by rear-naked choke and three by armbar. Struve has also scored wins by brabo choke and triangle armbar.

16: First-round finishes to his credit. His list of victims includes Antonio Silva, Lavar Johnson, Sean McCorkle and Chase Gormley.

12: Countries in which Struve has fought as a professional mixed martial artist. The globe-trotting Dutchman has slung leather in the Netherlands, England, Australia, Brazil, United States, Japan, Canada, Germany, South Korea, Ukraine, Russia and Finland.

1: Victories over Miocic, the reigning UFC heavyweight champion. Struve stopped the Strong Style Fight Team cornerstone with second-round punches at UFC on Fuel TV in September 2012.

.889: Winning percentage outside the Ultimate Fighting Championship. Struve compiled a 16-2 record before joining the UFC roster in 2009. Christian M’Pumbu and Romualds Garkulis were the parties responsible for his defeats.
