By the Numbers: ‘TUF 15’ Finale

Tristen CritchfieldJun 01, 2012

Martin Kampmann can’t be counted out. Seemingly outmatched on the feet against a favored opponent, the resilient Dane added to his comeback legend at “The Ultimate Fighter 15” Finale on Friday night, rallying to knock out Jake Ellenberger in the second round at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas.

In March, “The Hitman” took a beating at the hands of Thiago Alves for the better part of three rounds before recovering to stun the Brazilian with a late guillotine choke. Against Ellenberger, Kampmann appeared to be on the brink of defeat once again after a left hook from “The Juggernaut” floored him early in round one. Kampmann survived, however, and in the second frame, he dashed Ellenberger’s welterweight title hopes with a powerful knee in the clinch.

Now it is Kampmann who might have an apparent title eliminator bout with Johny Hendricks looming, while Ellenberger goes back to the drawing board. All that’s left over is the raw data. Here is a by-the-numbers look at the “TUF 15” Finale, with statistics provided courtesy of FightMetric.com.

1: Knockout loss in 33 professional fights for Ellenberger. Kampmann stopped the Reign MMA export with a knee in the clinch to become the first person to finish “The Juggernaut” with strikes since his career began in 2005.

44: Total significant strikes by which Kampmann has been outlanded in his last three UFC bouts, victories over Ellenberger, Thiago Alves and Rick Story. Meanwhile, the Dane outlanded Jake Shields and Diego Sanchez by a combined 36 significant strikes in his most recent defeats.

7: Knockdowns landed in the UFC career of Ellenberger. The Nebraskan floored Kampmann with a left hook early in round one, but was unable to finish the contest with follow-up punches on the mat.

3: Victories in four weeks for “TUF” winner Micheal Chiesa. Prior to submitting Al Iaquinta on Friday night, “Maverick” topped Justin Lawrence and James Vick in exhibition bouts to earn his way to the final.

6: Consecutive first-round submission triumphs for Chiesa after locking up Iaquinta with a rear-naked choke at 2:27 of the opening frame, not including his exhibition matches on The Ultimate Fighter. None of Chiesa’s previous five victims prior to his stint on “TUF” had lasted longer than 2:13.

22: Winners that have emerged from 15 seasons of the Ultimate Fighter after Chiesa earned the six-figure UFC contract on Friday night. “TUF” began in 2005, when Diego Sanchez and Forrest Griffin won the middleweight and light heavyweight competitions on the reality series.

4: Submissions wins in four UFC victories for Charles Oliveira, who elicited a tapout from Jonathan Brookins at 2:42 of the round two in a featherweight clash.

3.93: Submissions attempted per 15 minutes by Oliveira during his UFC career, No. 5 all-time within the promotion.

42: Significant strikes landed by Oliveira, the most of his UFC tenure. “Do Bronx” has only been outstruck once in seven Octagon appearances -- a first-round knockout loss to Donald Cerrone at UFC on Versus 5.

118: Significant strikes landed by Max Holloway in his lopsided three-round victory over Pat Schilling, the most of anyone on “The Ultimate Fighter 15” Finale card. The Hawaiian outlanded his opponent 50 to 9 in round two and 45 to 7 in round three.

17: Failed takedown attempts in 17 tries for Schilling. The Minnesotan went a combined 0 for 14 on takedowns in rounds one and two combined.

80,000: Dollars in bonus money earned by Justin Lawrence for his third-round head kick knockout of John Cofer. The Missouri native took home both “Fight of the Night” and “Knockout of the Night” honors.

24: Total strikes by which Daron Cruickshank outlanded Chris Tickle in rounds one (22 to 11) and three (26 to 13) combined in a unanimous decision triumph over his “TUF” castmate. By comparison, Tickle outlanded his opponent 28 to 11 in round two.

10: Wins by knockout, technical knockout or submission in 10 professional appearances for Myles Jury, who defeated Chris Saunders with a guillotine choke at 4:03 of the first round in his UFC debut. All of Jury’s opponents have been finished inside of a round.

.150: Significant striking accuracy for Sam Sicilia in the first round of his TKO victory over Cristiano Marcello. Sicilia landed 7 of his 47 significant strikes in an opening frame that saw him come up empty on the majority of his haymakers. The Washington native improved considerably in round two, connecting on 26 of his 46 significant strikes -- a 57 percent success rate -- en route to finishing his Brazilian opponent.
