What was supposed to be an exceptional night of mixed martial arts nearly turned disastrous for the Ultimate Fighting Championship, as the UFC 213 headliner between Amanda Nunes and Valentina Shevchenko was axed mere hours before the event was set to start on Saturday at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Even so, the walkout music lost none of its steam.
Yoel Romero and Robert Whittaker fought over the interim UFC middleweight championship in the makeshift main event. Juan Luis Guerra’s “Soldado” brought Romero and his eight-fight winning streak to the cage, while Whittaker opted to go with Roy Jones Jr.’s “Can’t Be Touched” ahead of the five-round clash. Meanwhile, Bold Action’s “Fearless” announced the arrival of former Strikeforce champion Alistair Overeem in advance of his co-headliner with rival Fabricio Werdum. A two-time Abu Dhabi Combat Club Submission Wrestling World Championships gold medalist, Werdum picked Luis Fonsi’s “Despacito” as his entrance tune.
Other standout tracks included The Immortals’ “Mortal Kombat Theme” (Curtis Blaydes), Franek Kimono’s “King Bruce Lee Karate Mistrz” (Daniel Omielanczuk), Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Bad Moon Rising” (Jim Miller) and Ini Kamoze’s “Here Comes the Hotstepper” (Brian Camozzi).
