UFC Fight Night 89 in the Canadian capital of Ottawa had a diverse cornucopia of fights and fittingly, the fighters who competed on the “MacDonald vs. Thompson” card entered the Octagon to a diverse assortment of musical jams.
“Wonderboy” Stephen Thompson dominated Rory MacDonald in the main event and his usual walkout song from Tenacious D that bears his nickname was fitting on the night, as the dynamic striker won a lopsided unanimous decision. MacDonald strolled to the Octagon to Korn’s classic “Got the Life,” but was hardly prescient, as Thompson busted up his nose and won every round on two official scorecards in the last fight on MacDonald's UFC contract.
Fan favorite Donald Cerrone laid a beating on Patrick Cote in the co-main event, knocking him out in the third. Cerrone, who came to battle to his typical “Cowboy” jam from Kid Rock, dropped “The Predator” several times and eventually knocked Cote out with a perfect left-right in the final round.
Other notable tracks from UFC Fight Night were “The Boss” from James Brown (Joanne Calderwood); “Gangsta’s Paradise” from 90's rapper Coolio (Elias Theodorou); hair metal anthem “Kickstart My Heart” from glam metal stars Motley Crue (Cote); and a kickass song from Moldova's Zdob si Zdub called “Moldovenii S-Au Nascut” (Ion Cutelaba).
