UFC 210 Free Picks: Cote is a No-Brainer Against Thiago Alves

(SPONSORED CONTENT) -- To say that the road for Patrick Cote in the UFC has been long and winding is an understatement. At the height of his talent, Coté was challenging Anderson Silva at UFC 90 during the living legend’s own apex. Then a scary knee injury ended that bout and cost the French-Canadian over a year of his career. Thankfully Coté is a very easy take in UFC 210 free picks.

Returning at UFC 113 in his native land of Montreal, Quebec, Coté thundered to the octagon ready to reclaim his spot as one of the top middleweights of his time. Instead he was submitted by Alan Belcher and then lost his next fight later that year to Tom Lawlor. Since returning from his devastating injury, Coté has gone an impressive 10-5 but has lost key matches.

Two of those defeats have come against top class welterweights. Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson ratcheted a unanimous decision at UFC 178 in September 2014, while Donald Cerrone ended him with a TKO victory last June in an incredibly entertaining war of attrition.

For my money in UFC 210 free picks, Coté has seemingly revitalized his career as a welterweight and simply run in to some blazing hot contenders that were simply a touch ahead of him. I’ve always rooted for Coté, and it seems that the UFC is as well because this matchup with Thiago Alves is a curious choice to say the least.

Welterweight Fight – Partrick Coté over Thiago Alves

Saturday, April 8th --- KeyBank Center, Buffalo

UFC 210 Betting Odds – Cote -160 / Alves +140

The knock on Alves has always been discipline. He’s gone just 4-6 in his last 10 bouts, and holds a similar record to Coté at 21-11 overall compared to 23-10. Alves’ most recent bout was a failed attempt to compete at lightweight. He not only lost to Jim Miller, he also missed weight.

The main problem in assessing where Alves is for the purpose of making UFC 210 free picks is that his losses have come against guys who are well past their glory days. Along with Miller, Alves has been defeated by Carlos Condit and Martin Kampmann in recent bouts. These are guys who are suffering losing streaks of their own. At best it appears that Alves is no more than a card stuffer. At worst he’s a punching bag.

That’s why the odds seem so cavernous. The mercurial talent of Coté hasn’t subsided and the move to welterweight has been a renaissance. The loss to Cerrone wasn’t damning as the two waged an epic war. Cerrone’s a beast for goodness sakes.

If anything, this matchup with Alves seems like an attempt to give Coté a layup victory. With those kinds of odds, and Alves’s recent string of losses against similar competition, I’m more than willing to take Coté heavily.
