UFC middleweight Costas Philippou has decided to call it a career.

A promotion official on Tuesday confirmed to Sherdog.com on Tuesday that Philippou was leaving the sport “to pursue other opportunities outside of the Octagon.” The 35-year-old fighter was recently removed from the middleweight rankings on UFC.com, according to a report from BloodyElbow.com.

Philippou last appeared at UFC Fight Night “Edgar vs. Faber” on May 16, when he lost a unanimous decision to Gegard Mousasi in the evening’s co-main event. The Bellmore Kickboxing Academy product briefly made his way into the 185-pound top 10 but lost three of his last four appearances with the Las Vegas-based organization. He was 6-4 overall during his promotional tenure.

Before he transitioned to MMA, Philippou went 3-0 as a professional boxer. The New Yorker then compiled a 7-1 record in the Ring of Combat promotion, including a victory over “The Ultimate Fighter 17” finalist Uriah Hall. After losing his UFC debut to Nick Catone, Philippou won five straight in the Octagon before dropping back-to-back fights against Francis Carmont and Luke Rockhold. His last victory came against Lorenz Larkin at UFC Fight Night “Brown vs. Silva.”
