Back at it for the middle stanza. Zeidan fires a front kick. Alhyasat answers with an inside leg kick and then goes high with a kick. Zeidan responds with a counter left, temporarily knocking his opponent off-balance. Alhyasat working over the legs with kicks and punches to the body. He then closes the distance and completes a takedown. Alhyasat settles in half guard, works his ground-and-pound and moves toward an arm-triangle. He passes to half guard, then advances to the back with hooks. Alhyasat flattens out his adversary, cuts loos with punches and hammerfists, threatens the neck and puts Zeidan to sleep with a face crank.

Round 1

Next up: the first PFL MENA bantamweight quarterfinal pitting Egypt’s Youssef (5-2, 0-0 PFL) against Iran’s Ghahraman (5-0, 0-0 PFL). Gerd Richter adjudicates matters. A glove touch and an embrace gets them going. Youseff probes with leg kicks. Ghahraman answers with one of his own. Light on their feet, both men working their fates. Youssef lunges in with hooks from both hands but whiffs by wide margins. Ghahraman shuts down a single-leg. Sharp one-two from Ghahraman. Youseff continues to swing and miss wildly. Not a good look for the Egyptian. Ghahraman flicks out his jab, drawing out another errant overhand left from his opponent. Youseff finds the mark with a leg kick, then ducks into a single-leg takedown. He sets up in full guard. Ghahraman hunts a kimura, sets off a scramble and gets back to his feet. Youssef cracks his counterpart with an overhand. Ghahraman gets back to his jab. Thirty seconds left in what has been an uneventful round to his point. Off they go for Round 2. Ghahraman paws with his jab and dodges an uppercut. Youssef lunges forward with hooks from both hands. Ghahraman denies a takedown, then throws out a leg kick. Not much urgency from the Iranian. Youssef flicks out his jab and connects with an inside leg kick. Gharaman catches a body kick, moves behind Youssef, gets off a right hand and separates. Gharaman shoots a right hand to the body, commands the center of the cage and continues to advance. He counters a Youssef leg kick with an overhand right. Sharp one-two from Gharaman. Youssef drops in on a single-leg and secures a takedown. Gharaman scrambles back to his feet, turns his back while he separates and eats a devastating flying head kick. Out go the lights. Gharaman was unconscious before he hit the canvas and still ate a series of hammerfists before the referee could intervene. Lightning-strike finish from Youssef.

Akman steps to the center and looks to get his hands going. Fazli using his footwork and lateral movement to avoid danger. With the respite between rounds over, the quarterfinalists get back to work. Darwish steps into an overhand right and his Diani reeling. He swarms with punches but cannot finish. Diani escapes to the center of the cage. Darwish presses forward and pins him to the fence, unleashing punches. Many of them miss. Diani ducks into a takedown and settles in half guard. He progresses to the back but loses position. Darwish scrambles behind him. Action stalls. Diani flirts with a kimura, then gets back to his feet and turns to face Darwish. They clinch along the fence. Diani scores with short punches and a knee. Two minutes to go. Darwish turns him into the cage, then separates. Darwish looks exhausted. He stands flat-footed in front of Diani. Darwish eats a right hook and a leg kick. Diani returns to his trusted jab and circles, forcing his fatigued opponent to pursue him. Rear-leg kick to the body from Diani. Darwish plods forward and drops in for an attempted takedown. No luck. They clinch again. Diani throws knees to the body and boxes the ears at the end of the round.

Anyone’s fight here. They finally touch gloves and acknowledge one another. Darwish takes the center. Diani circles on the outside and lands a side kick to the leg, followed by a jab to the body. Overhand left from Darwish. Diani rolls with it and circles out of danger. More jabs from Diani, who targets the head and the torso. Diani scores with a leg kick, circles and avoids return fire. Alaoui lands a knee to the shoulder and clings to a front headlock. He threatens the neck with a guillotine but allows Ayman to scramble to his feet. Alaoui appears to be in control entering the final five minutes. Ayman takes the center. Alaoui gives him something to think about with a powerful inside leg kick. Outcome still very much in doubt at the start of the third round. They trade jabs. An off-balance Galal sits down and somersaults backwards. Zarey shoots on the hips and dumps the Egyptian on the canvas. Punches follow. Zarey controls a wrist and hammers away with left hands. He passes to side control and digs elbows to the body. Situation has definitely taken a turn for the worse for Galal. Zarey drops elbows to the face and maintains an advantageous position. Galal tries to bridge out from the bottom. He goes nowhere. Galal scrambles to his knees and rolls. Zarey somehow stays on top. He drops punches and returns to side control. Only 60 seconds left now. Zarey tries to step over into a crucifix. No luck. Instead, he scores with hammerfists and short punches. Galal kicks off the fence but fails to escape. Looks like he may be stuck here until it ends. Zarey feeds him a few elbows and forearm strikes, tying a bow on a likely victory.

Hussein clinches and delivers a knee to the body. Alaqraa clinches. They exchange knees along the fence. Alaqraa mixes in short punches to the head and body. Hussein separates and they float back to the center. Stepping elbow from Hussein splits his counterpart’s guard. Alaqraa ducks a punch and completes a takedown in the middle of the cage.
